CORFU. Authorities seized 22 ancient coins.

(Police Department) A 41-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday, March 24, in Corfu by officers of the Northern Greece Sub-Directorate for Combating Organised Crime, on charges of violating antiquities protection laws and weapons legislation.

The arrest followed the assessment of intelligence and a targeted investigation by authorities. During the operation, police carried out four searches at homes and other premises, seizing 22 ancient coins, a set of brass knuckles, and a mobile phone.

According to the competent Ephorate of Antiquities, the coins date from the 4th century BC to the 17th century AD, fall under archaeological protection laws, and are considered to be of significant historical value.

The suspect is expected to appear before the public prosecutor, while the seized items will be transferred to the Ephorate of Antiquities for safekeeping and further evaluation.
