CORFU. Mass protest by teachers, parents and pupils demanding pay rises, staff shortages to be addressed and public education to be strengthened

There was a large turnout for the rally and protest held in Corfu on Wednesday morning, 21 October, as part of the education-wide mobilisation and a three-hour work stoppage (11:00–14:00) organised by the Corfu Secondary School Teachers’ Union (ELME), in coordination with the Primary Education Teachers’ Federation (DOE) and the Panhellenic Federation of Special Education and Support Staff.

Teachers, parents and pupils took to the streets to protest against the serious problems facing schools, demanding immediate solutions to thousands of teaching vacancies, the merging of classes, underfunding, and the prohibitive cost of housing and transport on the island.

Statement by Corfu Secondary School Teachers’ Union (ELME) President Ach. Kapetanios

“Greece is overflowing with pupils, teachers and parents taking to the streets to demand improvements in public education, pay rises and the filling of vacant posts. We are here, and we will continue to take to the streets to fight for our rights.”

“This policy is destroying public education and targeting us even more. It cannot find a single euro for salaries and pensions, yet at the same time it finds money for subsidies to business owners. We will continue our struggle to build the school we dream of!”
