Historic WWII Spitfire landed at Corfu Airport today

CORFU. The plane is returning to Greece from the UK and after flying over France and Italy it made stops in Corfu and Araxos on its way to Tatoi Air Base outside Athens.



People gathered at the airport for the chance to see the WWII fighter plane landing at Corfu Airport on Thursday afternoon.



The refurbished Spitfire belonging to the Hellenic Air Force is returning from the UK, where it was completely restored. After flying over France and Italy it made stops in Corfu and Araxos on its way to Tatoi Air Base outside Athens.





Of the 20,000 Spitfires that were built for the war between 1938 and 1948, there remain only 240 and approximately 60 of these are in flying condition. One of these is the Spitfire MJ755 which has just had a complete makeover at Biggin Hill on behalf of the Hellenic Air Force in order to take part in the anniversary celebrations.

There are another 70 in private museum collections around the world and another 110 are instorage awaiting restoration work.

The Spitfire arrived at Corfu Airport today with an escort of 2 F-16 fighter planes.
