CORFU. The kiosks will be able to collect and sort 15 different categories of recyclable materials.

Five recycling kiosks will soon be set up - one in each of Central Corfu municipal districts. Mayor Meropi Ydraiou signed the supply contract today and funding will come from the Philodimos II programme.

The kiosks are autonomous units for separate collection, processing and storage of recyclable materials with the smallest ecological footprint both in their construction and operation. They require a very small area and will be set up at key locations in each district.

They will be able to collect and sort 15 different categories of recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminium, metal, light bulbs, batteries etc.

Members of the public will be able to deposit materials through separate openings with signs indicating which type of material is accepted there.

The first recycling kiosk is expected to be set up within the next three months. These units will contribute significantly to sorting at source and reduce the amount of mixed waste transported off the island and will be an integral part of municipal infrastructure to ensure the separate sorting of the different recycling streams and increase recycling in general.

"These new units will contribute to the collection, processing and storage of recyclable materials with sorting at source as well as the development of a new type of behaviour and ecological awareness," said Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou. "The new municipality started to create the infrastructure for recycling literally from scratch - because recycling requires the proper infrastructure, and that is what we are creating."
