CORFU. The whole island is in mourning for the boy - including the Regional and Local Authorities and the Lawyers΄ Association. The street lighting started working properly 24 hours later, whilst Enimerosi was preparing its report.

The atmosphere was especially heavy at both the Regional Administration, with whom the mother of the boy works, and the Municipality as the mother is a friend of the Mayor. The Karpatselis family, which is well-loved on the island and known for its work with the football academy - Spyros was the nephew of Vaggelis Karpatselis, received sympathy and condolences from everyone. But how can the pain be salved?

The funeral takes place today, Thursday 3rd, at 15:30 at the Kompitsi cemetery.

The road accident

The Traffic Police is investigating the cause of the the tragic accident.

According to the initial evidence, it all happened very quickly at the section of Eth. Paleokastritsa Rd. where the street lighting wasn't working. The motorcyclist was returning to the town from his work on his medium-sized motorbike. The boy was attempting to cross the road and was hit by the motorbike, which then overturned. It appears that no cars were involved in the accident.

The boy was fatally injured and the motorcyclist was taken to hospital where he was found to have deep cuts and remains hospitalised out of danger.

The unacceptable condition of the road for years has caused exasperation and outrage from the public who once again complained bitterly about the the lack of lighting and long dark stretches along the road and elsewhere that has existed for years - with perhaps a few exceptions.

The blame game

Focussing on the lack of lighting, investigative reporting found that the maintenance of lighting on the main roads is the responsibility of a private contractor. Corfu DEDDIE Director Nikos Sofianos confirmed that there were no power cuts in the area on Tuesday night and that, in general, there is no problem with electricity supply to Eth. Paleokastritsa Rd.

Speaking to the Regional Authority - under extreme pressure following the accident as the condition of the main public roads is its responsibility - it was found that the contractor had been questioned and he said that he had never received any reports or complaints about the lighting!

The Traffic Police says that it is not their responsibility to report lighting problems (to the Regional Authority and the contractor).

So, without going into ridiculous details, it appears that noone is monitoring whether or not there is lighting on the main road.

This was confirmed 24 hours after the accident.

The greatest part of the road remained in darkness until Wednesday. Then, just before 19:00 on Wednesday 2 December, the street lighting at the road section in question was fully restored.
