CORFU. DEYAK is raising the issue again in an attempt to reduce energy costs.
DEYAK is in search of land for the creation of a photovoltaic park in order to cope with unbearable energy costs that have now increased to €8.5 million.
Part of the restored section of the old Temploni landfill is being examined by DEYAK in order to set up the photovoltaic park there, following the unsuccessful attempt to buy private land for this purpose, due to the high prices in the Corfu real estate market.
In fact, on Friday 31 March the issue was discussed at the Local Town Council meeting. However, the Council voted by a majority against the allocation of 20 stremma of this municipal plot in Temploni, in order to create the photovoltaic park there.
"For two or three years we have been applying to create sports facilities and a shooting range on these areas. Nothing has been done since then. The area in Temploni is unsuitable for the purpose DEYAK wants it for, because the residents can no longer tolerate the degradation of the area," Local Town Council President Alekos Alamanos told Enimerosi.
In 2020
As he said, this specific area had been requested again for the same purpose in 2020 by DEYAK, but it was rejected by the Municipal Council.
However, due to the huge electricity bills, which have doubled following the energy price increases, DEYAK is looking for a solution to reduce these costs. The €4 million have now reached €8.5 million, creating an unbearable burden on DEYAK and the creation of a photovoltaic park appears as a solution to cover part of the bills.
"We want to reduce the energy costs of DEYAK and that is why we are looking for a plot of land to create a photovoltaic park, in order to offset the energy costs we have. We looked at private plots as well, such as in Kefalovryso and Vatos, but it was too expensive and we went to the obvious," the DEYAK Board member Vassilis Argyros told Enimerosi, clarifying that although the Local Town Council was negative, the final decision will be made by the Central Corfu Municipal Council.
Still being looked into
However, the procedure is still being looked into. There is neither a study nor secured funding. As Mr. Argyros explained, a study for the construction will be drawn up once the plot of land where the facility will be created is secured, while it will be funded by European programmes.
