CORFU. Konstantina and Georgia Deligeorgopoulou were rarely seen in the neighbourhood - Their home was full of rubbish.

The two elderly sisters were living in isolation and neglect and were found dead yesterday afternoon in a state of advanced decomposition in the apartment they lived in on Vlachernon Street. Medical Examiner Ioannis Aivatidis, who will perform the autopsy today, told Enimerosi that an initial conclusion from the macroscopic examination is that their deaths must have occurred at least three months ago.

Abandoned and neglected

One body was found on the bed and the other on the floor near the bed and there was an overwhelming sense of neglect with bags of rubbish piled up everywhere!

Konstantina and Georgía Deligeorgopoulou, aged 78 and 79 respectively, were rarely seen in the neighbourhood. According to neighbours, they kept themselves to themselves and did not have much contact with people.

Apparently, this was the reason why the two sisters were not sought after by anyone for so many months. Unfortunately, it was the strong stench that finally alarmed the neighbours and raised suspicions about their disappearance. The macabre and tragic fact was only discovered after the door was opened by a locksmith...

They originated from Aigio, Achaia and in recent years they lived in Corfu. The little information that exists so far indicates that the women were unmarried, and no relatives have been found yet.

Difficulty in identification

"There is a problem with the identification of the bodies," forensic pathologist Ioannis Aivatidis told Enimerosi. "The bodies are in a state of mummification and it is impossible to determine which belongs to each of the two women. The DNA process cannot help us either, since they are sisters."

The date of death is also very difficult to determine accurately. The initial findings indicate that the deaths occurred around the same time and that so far there are no indications of foul play.

However, the forensic and police investigations are ongoing and every possible scenario is being looked into.
