CORFU. Fire hoses have also been placed, as they were a basic prerequisite.

As the Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou said, the operation of the new municipal car park in Lower Square is just a matter of days.

The car park has long provided free access to drivers, but it is always full due to the lack of parking spaces within the town. However, this will soon change as it will cost €3.

The Municipality has already carried out a trial run before the car park starts operating normally, in order to test the automated parking system with the automated bars at all entrances and exits, the automated pay-points and how payment is made with cash or card.

Fire hoses have been placed

Fire hoses have also been placed in the car park, as they were a basic prerequisite. What is left now is to remove parked cars from the area.

Thus, as the Deputy Mayor for Finance told Enimerosi, the citizens will be asked to remove their cars. "It is a matter of days for the car park to start operating again. The final arrangements are being made now, while we have already instructed the drivers to remove their vehicles from the area. An announcement will also be made for that. As for the fee, it will remain at €3," he said.

Following the placing of new markings required by law, there will be 198 parking spaces available compared to 270 previously. Proper signage has been installed, there are special needs spaces and there is a waiting lane outside the entrance. The Ionian Islands Region is expected to carry out an inspection in the coming days.

Meeting

The Deputy Regional Governor Kostas Zorbas and the responsible regional services held a working meeting with the Mayor Meropi Ydraiou on Monday 20 February, in order to determine whether all the requirements are met so that it can reopen, based on previous findings found in inspections by the Regional Authority. If the new inspection shows that everything is going well, it will reopen immediately.

As Mrs. Ydraiou told Enimerosi, the municipal car park in Lower Square has an actual license for the first time, as until now it was operating with temporary permits. "It is a matter of days for it to open again. The staff is being trained on the automated system and there are also trial tests for the bars," she pointed out.

Bollards in Garitsa

It is also worth noting that an informal parking area that was used extensively and illegally by drivers will not exist following the redevelopment of the Garitsa and Anemomylos Parks. The pavements that are occupied by cars will be freed, as the Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros told Enimerosi, and bollards will be placed along the pavement on the Garitsa shore road. This will protect the new pavements that have started to slowly be placed on the area, replacing the old broken slabs that had been severely damaged by parked vehicles.
