CORFU. Deputy Regional Governor Manolis Orfanoudakis says the contractor will then immediately begin work at Karina in Tsaki Benitses.

The resoration work on the section of road at Avra in Perama damaged by the Ballos storm is nearing completion.

It is expected that the work, which includes pile driving at a depth of more than 30 metres and providing support on the slope, will be completed by the end of February so that resurfacing can begin.

Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure and Technical Works Manolis Orfanoudakis told Enimerosi that the road will be opened to traffic after the end of February and the contractor will then immediately begin work at Karina in Tsaki Benitses.

"The kind of work being carried out in Perama is unprecedented and has never been previously undertaken in Corfu," said Mr. Orfanoudakis. "We're talking about pile driving at a depth of 25 metres and more at a difficult and busy spot - Eth. Corfu-Lefkimmi Rd. It is the most demanding, costly and time-consuming spot. We expect the first stage to be completed by the end of February and then all that remains is for the road to be resurfaced."

He added that that section of road in Perama will be completely ready for traffic before the beginning of the tourist season on 26 March.

The contractor has said that the work at Karina in Tsaki Benitses will be completed before Easter and the work at Aiolos is expected to be completed later.

At both of these locations the same measures will be implemented - one lane closed to traffic and temporary traffic lights set up.

Work completed in Ag. Deka and Stavros

The roadworks have already been completed in Ag. Deka and Stavros, where the contractor began in order to make diversionary roads available to and from the south of the island if the main Corfu-Lefkimmi had to be closed temporarily to complete the work in Perama, which was the maor project.

The work on the support walls in Viros will be the last to be completed.

The total budget for the work in Perama (Avra, Aiolos and Karina), Ag. Deka, Stavros and Viros is €1.5μ and is funded by the Ionian Islands Regional Public Investment Programme.
