CORFU. The grounds have been cleared and it is expected that the renovation work on Villa Rossa will begin by the end of the month.

Renovation work will soon be beginning on the emblematic Villa Rossa building, which has been abandoned for years and left in a state of neglect. According to the Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure and Technical Works Manolis Orphanoudakis, the contractor has now set up in the grounds and the renovation work is expected to begin by the end of the month.

The worksite has been fenced off and the grounds have been cleared. "Since the day that the contract was signed we have been in constant contact with the contractor as various permissions had to be granted in order for work to begin," Mr. Orphanoudakis told Enimerosi. "The office has been set up and the construction foreman is on site. In our last communication he said that the construction site is expected to be fully operational by the end of September."

Renovation work

The contract for the renovation work on the Villa Rossa was signed on 14 June this year by the Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa and the representative from the contracting company M.T. ATE Efstathios Mandilaras.

The project involves the renovation of the Listed Villa Rossa building complex which is located in 5,426.70m of land. It comprises the main Villa Rossa building, the old stables building, the octagonal kiosk, the small utility building with the old water tank and the grounds. All of these have been designated as listed historical monuments by the Ministry of Culture.

The project, which is included in the Ionian Islands 2014-2020 funding programme, has a budget of €4.8m and was put out to tender on 7/1/2021. The deadline for the completion of the work is 24 months from the signing of the contract. The company contracted to do the work has a lot of experience with similar listed buildings, including the Apollo Theatre in Ermoupolis, the Town Hall in Kotzia Square in Athens and the museums in Ioannina, Thebes and Delphi.
