CORFU. The aim is to create two different port terminals, a passenger one and a tourist one, that will be able to accommodate up to 85 private tourist boats.

The future of privatisations is included in the revised Asset Development Plan (ADP) of the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (TAIPED), which contains assets and public participations for utilisation. The list of the country's infrastructure to be utilised includes the Lefkimmi Port and the Mega-Yacht Marina in Corfu.

The TAIPED team, headed by CEO Dimitris Politis, arrived in Corfu on Friday afternoon and went directly to the Lefkimmi Port, accompanied by Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas and a Corfu Port Authority team, consisting of the President Giorgos Hondroyiannis, the Managing Director Spyros Zervopoulos and the Technical Works Director Aris Batsoulis.

Then, the TAIPED CEO visited the Mayor Kostas Lessis at the South Corfu Town Hall, where he revealed the plan for the port’s utilisation, in order to inform and listen to the local bodies’ opinions.

The plan

TAIPED’s master plan - a study prepared by the Marnet company - provides for an investment of around €4.5 million in order to develop and upgrade the facilities of the port, which was built in the 1980s. The concession will be for at least 20 years and the funds will be invested by the private party.

The aim is to create two different port terminals, a passenger one and a tourist one. The passenger terminal will have berths for 3 to 4 ferries, while the marina will have 85 berths for private tourist boats and 1 for a small cruise ship.

According to the study, the following projects are expected to be implemented in both the land and sea area:

- Reconstruction of a 600m long windward jetty with backfillings in the port’s northern part (surface of 10.8 acres)

- Reconstruction of a 160m long leeward jetty in a new and more suitable location in relation to the development of the land area

- Dredging of the port basin and its access channel

- Construction of new buildings and shelters for the passengers and users of the port

- Landscaping of the land area with necessary work (road works, entrance and exit gates, parking spaces, waiting areas for vehicles, pedestrian walkways, greenery, etc.)

Mayor Kostas Lessis is positive

The Mayor Kostas Lessis believes that South Corfu needs a modern port, as it lacks in port and harbour infrastructure. The Municipal Authority is positive towards the utilisation and anything else that could help the area’s tourist upgrading and the passenger service.

In his meeting with Mr. Politis, however, he asked for the local community’s opinion to be heard, after taking into account this project, which will be discussed in the South Corfu Town Council and also after taking into account social criteria, such as the preservation of the fishermen's and tourist berths – issues that still need to be clarified.

First quarter of 2022

Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas told Enimerosi that the study of both the Lefkimmi Port and the Mega-Yacht Marina has matured and it is planned to announce the international tenders soon, perhaps in the first quarter of 2022. “The study presented to the Municipal Authority is possible to be amended if there is a serious reason,” said Gikas.

On Saturday, the TAIPED team will have a meeting with the Corfu Port Authority Board and a meeting with the Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou. It will also visit the Imerolias Harbour in North Corfu, where they will discuss the development prospects, which are, however, at a very early stage.
