CORFU. Parents of pupils at the 6th Primary School are asking that repairs be sped up so that any danger to the children can be removed.

Only some of the danger has been removed at Corfu 6th Primary School from the wing where pieces of plaster fell from the roof last year. The multi-purpose hall still needs repair work and the heat insulation, false ceilings and paintwork need repair or replacement.

"The work is part of the Energy Upgrade programme, which doesn't only apply to the 6th Primary but to several other schools as well," the President of the Primary Teachers' Union Antonis Koursaris told Enimerosi. "It was approved by the Management Authority in January 2020. Why has the work still not been contracted out and how long will it take before it is completed?"

"The school has a tin roof," he added. "How is it possible that the classroom with the IT lab can be in the condition it is in?"

The parents of pupils at the school issued a statement saying:

"A few days ago we received a document from the Technical Works Department to the Planning Department, which was copied to the school and our association, regarding the partial removal of danger points at the 6th Primary School. It refers to the project 'Urgent repairs at the 6th Primary School' which includes the following work: '...immediate removal of plaster and lighting in the ceilings of nursery classrooms, painting and replacement of lighting and inspection of electrical installations. Guttering was sealed and damaged guttering removed. New trapezoidal corrugated sheeting with proper waterproofing was installed and other necessary work carried out.'

The document says that all danger will be removed when the plaster that has been removed is repaired or rebuilt and the heat insulation, false ceilings and paintwork are repaired or replaced. This work is part of the 'Energy Upgrade of Corfu Municipal School Buildings' programme, which is in the process of being contracted out.

Our association is always available to the municipality and municipal services for anything required to find a permanent solution to the problem and we call on all those involved proceed as quickly as possible to complete the work.
