CORFU. The two volunteers who conscientiously kept the Green Spot going for over two years have finally lost patience.

The lack of respect from a number of fellow residents resulted in them saying, "Enough is enough."

Stefanos Koulouris and Sofia Fifa made tremendous efforts to promote a culture of sorting at source, which is a key factor in solving the waste problem in all of the Corfu Municipalities.

Instead, every day they witnessed people turning the area into a rubbish dump, undermining all the voluntary work that they put into the project.

They announced the closure of the Green Spot on Facebook expressing their bitterness at the behaviour of some residents and the lack of help from the Municipality.

"In all the recycling centres in the north and centre of the island there are a lot of volunteers and in many cases help from the Municipality. Just two of us struggled here for two and a half years and then there was one. The discourteous behaviour of some wise guys and lowlifes has overridden our gallant endeavours. We apologise to those of you that supported recycling but the Green Spot is closing down."
