CORFU. Following the vandalism of the Giorgos Rallis bust in April 2019 the bust of Spyros Samaras has now been knocked onto the ground.

On Wednesday 5 August we had falling plasterwork in Liston and a tree falling on parked cars due the bad weather but there was a different kind of damage this morning...and not because of the weather. This time it was due to some unbalanced minds spoiling the image of Corfu Town for everyone else.

Those passing in front of the Municipal Theatre on Thursday 6 August were confronted with the sad sight of the bust of Spyros Samaras lying on the ground.

The bust of Spyros Samaras, composer of the Olympic Anthem, is normally to be seen on top of its base in front of the Municipal Theatre at the corner of ST. Desyllas St.

In 21st century Corfu it seems, however, that some people think it alright to knock down the bust of someone so important in the history of the island. And it also seems that vandals can do as they wish without being punished.

There was a similar incident in April 2019 when the bust of the former Prime Minister Giorgos Rallis in Kofinetta disappeared, to be found and replaced a few days later. This time the bust of Spyros Samaras didn't disappear but was left lying on the ground.

Enimerosi spoke with Deputy Mayor for Culture Chrysoula Tombrou, who expressed her shock at the incident and condemned this kind of behaviour which has nothing to do with the history and culture of Corfu.

Fortunately, there was no serious damage to the bust and the Municipality told Enimerosi that it will be placed back in its proper position.
