Today΄s fire in Temploni again broke out when the shift was changing

CORFU. The so-called 4th cell is burning from one end to the other at Temploni landfill. This area contains all the collected waste waiting to be baled.
According to eye witnesses, this fire broke out at the time when the workers' shift was changing. The other recent fire broke out just after 22:00 and this time it was just after 18:00.
The fire is burning strongly, assisted by the weather conditions, and is resisting the superhuman efforts of the firefighters on the ground and in the air. While there was still daylight the two PZL planes and a helicopter which picked up water from Gouvia Bay assisted in the operation.
At the moment the atmosphere is suffocating and for this reason Mayor Meropi Ydraiou informed the local residents that the Municipality has rented rooms in a hotel for those that need to stay there.
According to the President of the Cultural Society Magda Papanikolopoulou, the huge volume of waste which has caught fire twice in a month now shouldn't be there according to the contract with the waste baler. She said that they had given repeated warnings.
