CORFU. Temploni Cultural Society submitted the results of the chemical analysis of the unprocessed residue from Temploni to the Municipal and Regional Authorities, all the party leaders and municipal councillors.

Having published the results widely, Temploni Cultural Society is now requesting that tests to confirm the results be conducted by the Waste Manegement Organisation, university scientists , the Institute of Geological and Mineral Exploration (IGME), Deyak etc.

It is also requesting that these results be published and that action be taken to clean up the pollution in the area.

Letter

After many years of action against the crime being committed at the euphemistically named Temploni landfill we had placed our hopes on moral justice and the justice system as all levels of administration showed no interest.

We were proved wrong, however!!

Following the court's dismissal of the case against those accused and with a sense of responsibility towards society and the next generation we considered it our duty to take the initiative of sending for analysis samples of the unprocessed residue from several spots in the area under the plant at the landfill - which flow and end up in Bretanou Lake (the island's so-called protected wetlands).

It is with regret that we present the results to you today and demand the following:

1. That the waste management organisation immediately makes public the results of the analyses it is obliged to conduct regularly in accordance with the environmental impact study, the Ministry of Environment and national and European legislation.

 2. That an extensive inspection be carried out by public bodies, university scientists , the Institute of Geological and Mineral Exploration (IGME) etc. of the underground and surface water table as well as the atmosphere.

3. Determine the cause of the unprocessed residue's presence in the stream and fixing the leak.

4. The immediate decontamination of the heavy pollution in the area.

5. DEYAK to immediately conduct inspections to trace heavy metals in the wells supplying the water supply networks in the area and to publish the results.

We believe that the submitted requests will be adopted by the Municipal Council as they are for the protection of the environment and, consequently, public health.

We attach the results of the analyses.
