CORFU. The Municipality immediately took action.

An important moment for the natural heritage of North Corfu was recorded on Thursday, July: a Caretta caretta turtle nest was discovered and immediately marked on the beach of Agios Georgios Pagon, confirming the ecological significance of the area and the need for its protection.

The presence of the nest was discovered and immediately reported by Roland Tschaschke and local resident Sokratis Pagiatakis, who notified the Municipality of North Corfu. The response of the municipal authorities was swift and decisive: the Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy, Cleaning Services, Environment, and Public Relations, Spyridoula Kokkali, and the President of the Municipal Council, Panayiotis Papadatos, went directly to the site, ensuring the nest was protected and properly marked.

Cooperation with ARCHELON – Integration into the national monitoring network?

Immediate communication followed with the Archelon Society, the most specialised organisation for the protection of turtles in Greece. Based on Archelon's technical guidelines, the nest was officially recorded via the digital platform, incorporating the Agios Georgios Pagon beach into the national nesting monitoring network.

The turtle as a symbol of ecological balance:

The presence of the Caretta caretta is strong evidence of the ecological value of the area, which acts as a living refuge for biodiversity. The recording of the nest signals that the coastal ecosystems of North Corfu remain functional, sensitive, and invaluable.

The Municipality of North Corfu, with consistency and respect for the natural environment, has taken on the responsibility of protecting the nest. Special informational signs were placed at the site, and the area around the nest was discreetly marked to avoid any disturbance during the critical hatching period.

Appeal to residents and visitors:

Effective protection of the nest requires collective awareness and respect. The Municipality makes a heartfelt appeal to everyone – residents, professionals, and visitors – to actively contribute to this effort by carefully following the guidelines below:

  • Do not approach or photograph the nest, especially at night

  • Avoid using lights, flashlights, or mobile phones near the nest

  • Do not place umbrellas, sunbeds, or other objects within a 5-metre radius

  • Do not touch or dig the sand near the area

  • Do not allow pets to approach

Protecting nature is not just a formality – it is a sign of culture, sensitivity, and responsibility.
When nature entrusts us with new life, our response must be worthy of that trust.
