CORFU. Seed balls for World Food Day.

(Spyridoula Kokkali) On the occasion of World Food Day, our Healthy Little Eaters (www.healthylittleeaters.gr) are participating in an important ecological initiative by making seed balls with vegetable seeds. The aim of this activity is to raise children's awareness about the concept of sustainable food cultivation, as well as to give them the opportunity to understand the importance of nutrition for both people and the planet.

Seed balls are a simple yet effective reforestation and cultivation technique, which has been used by environmental activists around the world. The balls made of soil, clay and seeds keep the seeds safe until they find suitable conditions for germination. In our case, the vegetable seeds we use are directly linked to the message of World Food and Nutrition Day, emphasising the need to cultivate and consume healthy and sustainable food.

Growing our own vegetables is not only a way to connect with nature but also a way to promote healthy eating. Locally grown vegetables are rich in nutrients, without the chemicals often used in industrial food production. Through this activity, our children learn the value of sustainability, understanding that the Earth's resources are limited and that responsible use of them is essential to ensure future food supplies.

At the same time, this initiative promotes environmental awareness. Seed balls help improve soil quality, enhancing biodiversity and the land's productivity, which is crucial for maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Growing vegetables through this method reduces the environmental footprint of food production and contributes to creating a more sustainable world.

In this way, our pupils actively participate in an initiative that promotes healthy eating, sustainable cultivation and care for the planet.
