New electricity connection between Igoumenitsa and Corfu
CORFU. This is an important new project, with a budget of 42,800,000 euros, that strengthens the resilience of Corfu΄s electrical system.
The Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) is announcing a tender for the new high-voltage transmission line Igoumenitsa - Corfu (a mixed underground and submarine cable line with its accompanying works), in order to reinforce the island's electrical system.
ADMIE states that this is the third connection route between Corfu and the Mainland System through the new cable connection "Aetos - Corfu," which is estimated to be completed by 2025.
The project involves the study, supply, and installation of a complete single-circuit 150 kV cable system for the connection between Igoumenitsa and Corfu. The aim of the project is to ensure the secure power supply of the island by strengthening its existing interconnection.
Currently, Corfu is connected to the mainland electrical system with two 150 kV cable lines. The new project constitutes the third 150 kV cable line, which will be implemented on a new route. Upon completion of the project, it will be possible to securely cover additional loads of at least 60 MW, even under emergency conditions.
The project includes the study, supply, and installation of underground (4 km) and submarine (17.1 km) alternating current cables with a voltage of 150 kV, within 12 months from the signing of the contract with the contractor.
The first part of the project includes a three-pole 150 kV submarine cable, 17.1 km long, with two integrated submarine fiber optic cables, which will connect the "Aetos" area of the Municipality of Filiates with the "Ormos Potamou" area of the Municipality of Central Corfu.
The second part of the project includes a three-phase circuit of underground 150 kV cables, accompanied by two underground fiber optic cables, 320 m long.
In its final section, the three-phase circuit of underground 150 kV cables (with the fiber optic cables) will connect to the Corfu I Substation.
This is an important new project, with a budget of 42,800,000 euros, that strengthens the resilience of Corfu's electrical system, as it will securely cover the continuously increasing demand, especially during the summer months (due to tourism).
ADMIE is investing 100 million euros by 2025, based on its 10-year development plan, to upgrade the electrical interconnections in the Ionian Islands, ensuring their smooth energy supply.
