Establishment of animal welfare association in North Corfu - Requests to the Municipality

On January 10, a meeting was held in Acharavi by residents to discuss the complete lack of any action by the Municipality of North Corfu on the issue of stray animals, with the result that the burden of feeding, caring for, sterilising, and sheltering them, etc., falls exclusively on the shoulders of volunteers and animal welfare groups.

The discussion highlighted the need to establish an Animal Welfare Association in North Corfu in order to coordinate our actions and to be able to demand that immediate measures be taken to address the problem.

Until the Association is recognized by the Court of First Instance, a coordinating committee was formed, which drafted a resolution that has been sent to the municipal authority, the municipal councillors of all parties, and the community leaders of North Corfu. With this resolution, we are calling for:

• The design of a comprehensive operational programme for the management of stray animals in the Municipality of North Corfu, and the supervision of this programme by a five-member committee.
• The free provision of quality food and medicine to volunteers and animal welfare groups that care for stray animals, as well as the placement of feeding stations and, especially in the summer, water.
• The creation of a municipal veterinary clinic in the Municipality of North Corfu, with the provision of a permanent veterinarian and other staff.
• The creation of a municipal or inter-municipal shelter for stray animals, with permanent full-time staff, without the involvement of NGOs and contractors, for the care and rehabilitation of stray animals so that they can be adopted or reintegrated into their own environment.
• The design of educational programmes that will cultivate the conscience of the responsible guardian of pets and the promotion and encouragement of adoption and not the purchase of animals through campaigns, through the creation of a dedicated website, but mainly by providing incentives (free food, medical care, reduction of municipal taxes, etc.).
• The creation of a space for the disposal of dead animals.
