Small fires in Lafki and Loutses - Battle with the flames continues
CORFU. Police have lifted traffic restrictions but recommend that people avoid going to areas affected by the fires.
Firefighters and volunteers continue the battle with the flames in North Corfu. According to the Fire Department, firefighters have been operating until 20:30 in scattered places in the northeastern part of the island even though the fires are under control. Small outbreaks were detected in Lafki and Loutses.
Police have lifted traffic restrictions but recommend that people avoid going to areas affected by the fires.
Aerial forces have ceased to operate during the nighttime hours, while ground forces, consisting of 112 firefighters (including reinforcements from Bulgaria) and 36 vehicles, are still operating.
The firefighters are in various areas of North Corfu, such as Avliotes and Troumpeta, and are staying alert in case there are any flare-ups.
Fires spotted earlier in Ropa Valley and Varipatades were immediately extinguished after firefighters were alerted by members of the Sports Motorcycle Club that patrolled the areas.
