CORFU. The Ionian Islands Regional Council unanimously approved the programme contract between the Regional Authority and the 6th Health Region for the procurement of the equipment.
Hundreds of women who were unable to undergo a simple but essential examination in primary healthcare due to a lack of necessary equipment will no longer suffer. Corfu Town Health Centre of the City will be equipped with a gynaecological ultrasound laboratory and a colour printer, following the unanimous approval of the programme contract between the Ionian Islands Regional Council and the 6th Health Region for their procurement, totalling €26,000 (including VAT).
The issue was brought to the attention of the council meeting held in Lefkada by the Deputy Regional Governor of Public Health, Melita Andrioti. A relevant request from the Town Health Centre preceded this, asking for the assistance of the Region to cover the urgent needs for medical equipment.

According to the timetable, the equipment funded by the Region will be installed nine months from the signing of the programme contract with the 6th Health Region. The equipment procurement will be carried out through a competition organised by the Region.
"By doing this, the Health Centre will be upgraded, and at the same time, Corfu Hospital will be relieved of this particular examination," Ms. Andrioti told Enimerosi. For the time being, only the Town Health Centre has the capability to acquire this particular equipment, as it is the only of the Health Centres on the island that has a gynaecologist on its staff.
Until now, women who wish to undergo a vaginal ultrasound must either wait up to two months to have the examination at Corfu Hospital or pay out of their own pocket to be served more promptly at a private diagnostic centre.
This issue was brought to light by Enimerosi in a report published on 20 January, 2023.
As emphasised by the gynaecologist at the Town Health Centre, Nikos Polyzos, President of the Panhellenic Union of Public Hospital Doctors, in the two years he has served there, he has helped 3,400 women, who did not, however, have access to this particular examination, which can potentially detect gynaecological issues.
