CORFU. The two groups performed in Athens on Saturday 11 March.

There was warm applause for Sinies Cultural Society and the Hellenic-Georgian 'Caucasus' Cultural Centre at the Knossos Theatre, Athens on Saturday 11 March.

The friendship between the two groups began about 13 years ago and since then they have worked together to preserve the cultural heritage of both areas. At the event, North Corfu Deputy Mayor for Culture Mavronas honoured the president of the Hellenic-Georgian 'Caucasus' Cultural Centre Avtadil Mikaberidze on behalf of the municipality. Mr. Mikaberidze, in turn, exchanged gifts of friendship with the president of Sinies Cultural Society Garnelis.

Both men addressed the audience and pointed out the importance of the 13-year relationship between the two areas and culture, which contributes to development and connects two different cultures, each with its own traditions.

Mr. Garnelis also referred to the big event which will take place in Corfu on 6-10 September this year - the International CIOFF Festival of Mediterranean Cultures, which is being organised by the Greek branch of CIOFF (International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts), the Ionian University and Sinies Cultural Society.

Both the children's and adult dance groups took part with traditional dances from the Aegean, Zakynthos, Lefkada and, of course, Corfu. The 'Caucasus' Cultural Centre performed dances from the Black Sea, Georgia and Tbilisi as well as traditional Georgian songs, with Leyla Machitidze singing the Georgian national anthem.

Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa sent a message saying, "I am certain that, once again, you will showcase the island's culture and rich artistic traditions, making us proud of the modern identity of Corfu and the performances of the young generation."

In attendance at the event were representatives from the Georgian Embassy, former minister Kratsas, the president of the Greek branch of CIOFF Ioannides and a big audience who enjoyed the rich musical and dance performance.
