CORFU. Consultations will last from 23 February to 24 March - What is planned to be done according to the Environmental Impact Study.
Consultations for the modern pilot project in Kaliviotis, South Corfu, which concerns the creation of an artificial island at a distance from the coast with a marina and luxury villas that will have their own space for boats, are beginning and will last for one month (from 23 February until 24 March).
The Ministry of Environment and Energy has already forwarded the project environmental impact study for publication, consultation and opinion to the Ionian Islands Regional Council, so that the local community, as well as the collective bodies of local government (Quality of Life Committee, the Municipal Consultation Committee and the Local Councils), can be informed and express their views.
The total cost of the investment is expected to be €273m (including VAT).

The project
The new marina in Kaliviotis, Lefkimmi, is planned to be located at a distance of about 280 meters from the coastline, on a new land area that will be shaped by filling in part of the sea area. An 8-metre bridge connected to the existing municipal road will provide access to the marina.
The marina will have 105 berths with a maximum length of 80 metres. There will also be a special berth for Aristotle Onassis' yacht 'Christina O', which is approximately 100 metres long.
It is also planned to create shops-services, parking spaces, outdoor entertainment and event areas, temporary exhibition areas and residential buildings.
Based on the 458-page study, the location of the marina was chosen taking into account the smooth morphology of the bay.

Environmental impact
In terms of environmental impact, the project has no negative impact on the environment, as it is not included in any Natura 2000 area and is far from them.
Port works
The marina will be horseshoe-shaped with a basin in an area of approximately 115 stremma.
Municipal Council meeting
As the South Corfu Mayor Kostas Lessis told ERA Corfu, in order for an investment to be supported, the public has to agree with it. He added that a Municipal Council meeting will be held in the coming days, in order for it to be informed and express its opinion on the controversial tourist investment.
I'm concerned and I'm dealing with it in a mature and proper way. The Municipal Council will meet to inform the councillors and, if necessary, there will be a public meeting because the citizens also need to be aware of the investment which requires their agreement," he said.
The plan has already received the approval of the Ministry of Tourism's Committee of Tourist Ports for its creation in Kaliviotis and the project, which will be public, will be carried out through the Recovery Fund. Interest has already been expressed by a group of companies that will run it for 30 years and then it will be returned to the public sector.
Benefits for South Corfu
The investment, as it has become known, will also have benefits for South Corfu include new ports in Petriti, Kaliviotis and Alykes, as well as the redevelopment of the entire Kaliviotis beach.
However, as Mr. Lessis said, the question that arises is who will be responsible for the management of the ports - the Municipality or the Corfu Port Authority. He also said that the factors that will be taken into account for this investment are environmental protection, the benefits for the area and people's approval.
It is worth noting that other regions of western Greece are also claiming the project.
