Corfu 1st Junior High and Skripero Junior High get a playroom

CORFU. The main aim is for the pupils to spend their time creatively when there is a gap in the timetable.
The management of the Corfu 1st Junior High School has taken the creative use of free time in schools one step further. The school now has a playroom, giving the 240 pupils the opportunity to have their own space for creative activities, following the standards of schools abroad.
The idea came from the educational visits the school made to European countries as part of the Erasmus programme. Pupils and teachers on their trips to France, Germany and elsewhere saw a different approach to schools that were more friendly and familiar to the children themselves. They combined the different elements that aroused their interest from each school abroad and created a space where they would feel more comfortable and beautiful, so that it would not be the usual school environment anymore.
Board games and more
The result is very impressive. The basement room that has gone through various uses (classroom, computer lab, escape room created last year for the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution), was transformed into a beautiful place for the school's pupils to hang out. Board games, chess, a wooden table football and a projector framed by stylish furniture are available to the 240 pupils.
A computer is expected to be installed soon, while the area will gradually be enriched with more board games. "Whatever we saw on our travels we adopted, with the aim of making pupils feel more comfortable at school and love it. The main aim is for the pupils to have a space where they can use their time creatively and socialise when a gap in the timetable arises", the Corfu 1st Junior High School Principal Giorgos Kefallonitis told Enimerosi.
However, the pupil's response is great. The area has been loved and many even ask to use the playroom after classes are over.
Initiative
The whole project is an initiative of the Teachers' Association, while it was actively supported by both the Parents and Guardians Association and the pupils' council meeting who contributed to the purchase of board games. The furnishing of the area was made possible thanks to OLKE and the managing director Mr. Zervopoulos' kind donation, while the wooden table football was donated by teacher Dimitrios Litsa.
At the Skripero Junior High
An edutainment room has been operating since last year at the Skripero Junior High. So far, only these two schools in Central Corfu Municipality have such rooms.
"Wherever there is available space within the school, as the accommodation needs come first, we are helping to create edutainment rooms. The philosophy is to have a space that combines education and entertainment", said the Secondary Education School Committee President Konstantinos Kostalis.
