CORFU. A 46-year-old foreign national was arrested for six cases of fraud.
A 46-year-old foreign national was arrested on Wednesday 28 September and was charged with the felony of fraud.
More specifically, the arrested woman, along with her accomplices, phoned an elderly man, pretending to be police officers, and told him that his daughter had caused a fatal road accident. They demanded €120,000, at first, so that she would avoid the legal consequences.
The elderly man managed to collect €6,000, he met with the 46-year-old woman and handed her the money.
Following up on information received, a police operation was set up and the woman was found driving a van. The police found and seized €6,000, a wig and a black surgical mask. The car she was driving was also seized.
In a search of her home, accompanied by a judicial officer, €2,200 were also seized, as well as clothes as evidence.
It was found that, so far, the 46-year-old woman, along with her accomplices, are involved in five more cases of fraud against elderly people in Corfu and Thesprotia. In particular:
- in four cases (including one attempt) in Corfu from 3 to 26 August, where they managed to get €50,000, €2,000 and €1,000, as well as jewelery and
- in Thesprotia on 16 September, where they managed to get €12,000.
The scammers would phone elderly people and pretend to be police officers or doctors, asking for money either by saying that a family member would avoid legal consequences after causing a fatal road accident or that a family member would need surgery immediately following a road accident.
The arrested woman will be taken to appear before the Corfu Prosecutor.
