CORFU. The whole facility is in a decrepit state.
The long-term problems at the Mental Health Centre, both in terms of the infrastructure and the lack of personnel remain an open sore. The Centre belongs to the Hospital Psychiatric Department and is housed in the former Psychiatric Clinic.
A section of ceiling collapsed today highlighting how dilapidated the building is and the lack of maintenance. A large number of people, including children, visit the Centre every day and it was only by good luck that noone was injured.
There are signs of dilapidation elsewhere on the ceiling as well as on the floor, the door frame, the false ceilings and the electrical and plumbing installations.
According to employees, the management has notified Corfu Hospital administration countless times.
The run-down state of the facility can be seen in the lack toilet facilities, with only an outdoor chemical toilet, which itself is in disgusting condition.

"Corfu Mental Health Centre - the only primary psychiatric facility in Corfu - has been left to its fate," says the Corfu Union of National Health System Doctors (EGESYK).
"We call on the Corfu Hospital administration to do something about the situation at the Centre, which it has left to its fate.
Not only is the facility understaffed by 70%, mainly in paramedical services, but the building itself has been neglected showing complete disregard for the services offered to the public.
We have repeatedly warned them about the deficiencies in the services and the state of the building.
It was just by good fortune that noone was injured today in a building that children also visit by the collapse of the ceiling and the administration has been informed in writing.
This is, however, not the only problem. The toilets are non-functional - there is just a chemical toilet outdoors - the infrastructure is rotten, blocked sewage pipes and the electrical installations are dangerous.
We would like to remind you that this building, which is totally unsuitable in our opinion, is viisited by our children.
We would like to ask the administration what they have done about the building infrastructure at the Mental Health Centre.
What is planned with regard to the mobile units?
What do they plan to do with the former conservatory which has received approval to operate as a Mental health Centre?"
