CORFU. The Corfu International Festival was launched at the Old Palace yesterday.
Central Corfu Municipality recently announced the the first Corfu International Festival to everyone's surprise. On Thursday 1 September Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, Artistic Director Dionysis Grammenos and the Deputy Minister for Culture Nikolas Yiatromanolakis held a press conference to answer all the questions.

Various dignitaries were in attendance at the Museum of Asian Art, where the press conference took place, along with many involved in the local authority in the past.

Mayor Meropi Ydraiou was first to speak and described the difficulties that had to be overcome to hold on to the funding that had been provided for the festival. The funds had been secured by the previous mayor Nikolouzos from the ESPA programme but the plan for the use of the funds hadn't been approved. Ms. Ydraiou said that the municipality had made huge efforts and was able at the last moment to submit a business plan which was approved.

Ms. Ydraiou explained that it will be a long-term project - it will not just be a series of events but aims to be a platform to showcase the culture of the island. To this end, and association has been set up - Friends of the Festival - where local groups will be able to submit proposals for 2023.

The Deputy Mayor praised the effort and stressed the need to promote the island's cultural product and the significance of the festival with regard to attracting international visitors and being an umbrella for local cultural activities.
Journalist Lilian Avrosin coordinated the press conference
Festival Artistic Director Dionysis Grammenos, an international conductor, presented the festival programme.
He spoke of the international musicians taking part as well as local cultural groups.
Preparations for the first concert in Plakada last night
The first event was held in Plakada last night with the Athens Classical Players - members of the string section of Athens State Orchestra - and violin soloist Giorgos Banos.
