CORFU. He sees culture as the engine of Corfu΄s economy.

The Deputy Minister for Culture Nikos Yiatromanolakis' visit in Corfu this morning was full of meetings with bodies and associations. The Deputy Minister visited Corfu on the occasion of the opening of the International Festival, which was recently announced by the Corfu Municipality with Dionysis Grammenos as artistic director.


   Accompanied by Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, he visited a small shoe factory in Guilford St.
 
Mr. Yiatromanolakis expressed his interest in the activity of small businesses involved in handicrafts and said that, apart from the Corfu Festival, his visit also concerns the possibilities that small factories producing handicraft products have to contribute to the development of a market of special interest.

   The Museum of Asian Art Director Despina Zernioti showed the Deputy Minister, the Mayor and their companions around the Museum
 
His tour in Corfu Town continued with a visit to the Museum of Asian Art, where the Museum's Director Despina Zernioti showed him around. He then visited the Municipal Gallery, where he talked about the purpose of his visit.

The Deputy Minister said that he considers Corfu a privileged area, where the economic side of cultural activity and heritage has been widely known. The purpose of his visit is to officially announce the beginning of the Corfu International Festival, which will bring both residents and visitors in contact with a series of very important cultural events.


 
He also said that he contacted the bodies of the so-called living culture (the non-monumental or ancient culture of our country) and invited bodies and citizens to attend the speech he will make tonight in the afternoon at the Chamber on crafts and cultural heritage.
