CORFU. The ‘Mediterranean Cultures’ Festival will take place in Corfu from 6 to 10 September 2023 with participants from 16 Mediterranean countries.
The Sinies International Dance Group Festival has been organised for 23 years and it is one of the most important cultural events of Corfu. It has been registered in the events (international festivals) of CIOFF-UNESCO and every year many groups want to participate knowing that Corfu is an attractive destination.
Over the years, numerous dance groups from Greece and abroad (Serbia, Georgia, Peru, Paraguay, Taiwan, Croatia, Mexico, Spain, Senegal, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, Skopje, etc.) have taken part and more than 2,000 dancers have been hosted by the Sinies Cultural Society. During these 23 years, experiences have been gained and friendships and cultural partnerships were created.
In this year's 23rd International Dance Festival there were groups from Georgia, Serbia, as well as local groups such as, the Nymphes Cultural Society, the Kassiopi Cultural Society, the Corfu Dance Group, the Perithia “Philipos Vlachos” Society, the Sinies Cultural Society and the Corfu Philharmonic Society.
The people's response to the festival was great. On the first day the bands visited the San Giacomo Town Hall, where the Mayor Meropi Ydraiou and the Deputy Mayor for Culture Chrysoula Tombrou welcomed them and exchanged gifts. There then followed a parade through the town. On the second day the groups visited the North Corfu Town Hall, where the Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris and the Deputy Mayor for Culture Theodoros Mavronas welcomed them. An official of the Cultural Institute of Sharjah from the United Arab Emirates, Sagr Mohament, was also in Corfu and there were discussions for further collaboration and an official visit to Corfu by the Institute's President in the following months.
During their stay, the guests visited the Museum of Asian Art, as well as various other areas in Corfu.
The event was under the auspices of CIOFF and was dedicated to the memory of the Asia Minor disaster 100 years ago. The help of the Society's volunteers was enormous, and so was the help of the sponsors and the various businesses. The event was also supported by the Ionian Islands Region, the Chamber of Commerce, the North Corfu Municipality, the Central Corfu Municipality and the Corfu Scouts.
The next big event will be the ‘Mediterranean Cultures’ Festival which will take place in Corfu from 6 to 10 September 2023 with participants from 16 Mediterranean countries.
