Deputy Minister for Civil Protection says that Lefkimmi and Benitses Police Stations will not be merged

CORFU. The Deputy Minister for Civil Protection agreed not to merge the Lefkimmi and Benitses Police Stations and said that immediate steps would be taken to ensure that.
A meeting was held today at the Ministry for Civil Protection with the Deputy Minister Lefteris Economou, on the initiative of the Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas. Also present at the meeting were the President and Vice-President of the National Federation of Police Employees (POASY) Grigoris Gerakarakos and Christos Syntrevelis, as well as the President of the Corfu Police Employees' Union Nikos Bozikis.
During the meeting, Mr. Gikas asked not to merge the Lefkimmi and Benitses Police Stations, a request that both the President of the National Federation of Police Employees and the President of the Corfu Police Employees' Union supported.
The MP emphasised the fact that the Central and South Corfu Municipal Councils are asking for the Police Stations to not be merged, while there are operational criteria that contribute to this.
The Deputy Minister for Civil Protection agreed with this and stated that in the near future actions will be taken to ensure that they will be preserved.
Mr. Gikas also raised the issue of creating a new police station in Agios Ioannis, provided that the number of permanent jobs in the Corfu Police Department will increase.
After the meeting, Mr. Gikas made the following statement:
“It is known that the SYRIZA-ANEL government had decided to merge the Lefkimmi and Benitses Police Stations. However, recently the President of the Corfu Police Employees' Union Nikos Bozikis brought up the issue again and I took the initiative to organise this meeting. I would also like to thank the Deputy Minister for Civil Protection Lefteris Economou, who understood the serious issues raised.
Thus, the bureaucratic procedures for the Lefkimmi and Benitses Police Stations to be preserved will start immediately.
I also asked the Deputy Minister to examine the possibility of creating a new police station in Agios Ioannis, which is also a long-standing demand of the area's residents.
Today the ND Government proved once again that it listens to the local communities and supports their demands.”
