CORFU. The project for the construction of a municipal open-air venue in Mantouki is going to be implemented.
The concert called 'Jump' that took place in Spianada on Wednesday 6 July marks the beginning of the implementation of a project that had been discussed for a long time in Corfu.
The project concerns the long-awaited redevelopment of the old slaughterhouses in Mantouki in order to become a cultural centre. The project involves the construction of an open mall.
“No, it is not something similar to the mall in Athens”, the Deputy Mayor for European Programmes and Corfu DIPETHE President Panayiota Tzanne assured us. Even though it is called an open mall, it will be public and open to all members of the public. Mrs. Tzanne believes that the addition of such a venue to the Municipality was necessary, as it comes to solve the long-standing problem of housing artistic events held during summer. As she said, this is a project that will upgrade the entire area.
According to the Central Corfu Municipality website, the funding was secured in 2017 by the former Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos, but for unknown reasons the project never started. The new Municipality, using the money from the programme, announced an open invitation for tenders on 23 May 2022, in order to find the company that will undertake this project.
The project concerns construction and electromechanical work required for the conversion of the old municipal slaughterhouses in Mantouki into a cultural centre.
The project's budget is €940,000 and it is funded by the EU, by national resources through the Public Investment Programme and the SATA Programme. The "Jump" project is being implemented in the framework of the Ionian Islands 2014-2020 Operational Programme and it has to be completed within 10 months since the signing of the contract.
Regarding the management body of the venue, the study or anything else related to the business and operational plan of the cultural centre, Mrs. Tzanne was not able to give us any information, but she said that DIPETHE has planned a series of theatrical events that will take place in the venue, when the project will be completed. The question of how this particular venue will cover the costs of its operation and maintenance remains unanswered. Certainly, other similar venues already operating on the island can stand as examples to be followed or avoided for this project as well.
