CORFU. All those involved in the supply and distribution of seafood (fishermen, chefs and cooks, fishmongers, restaurant and hotels owners, etc.), as well as the public, are invited to Corfu on Friday 20 May at 12:00-14:00 at the Municipal Theatre, in order to be informed about the area΄s alien species and their impact.

As part of the project, the environmental organisation iSea will be in Corfu, where an informative and gastronomic event will take place on 20 May. The event will continue in Paxos on 21 May.

iSea, with the support of the Blue Marine Foundation, will present for a second time in the Ionian Islands the 'Pick the Alien' project, aiming to inform the local communities about the impact of marine alien species and the ways of dealing with them, as well as to highlight the taste value of those that are edible.

The project has been implemented since 2019 and more than 3,000 citizens have been informed in the Ionian Islands, the Cyclades and Crete. This year, however, both the team and the objectives of the programme are growing! In addition to promoting the consumption of edible alien species, our aim now is to promote the responsible seafood consumption and to replace the native species, whose populations are declining, with edible alien species.

All those involved in the supply and distribution of fish and seafood (fishermen, chefs and cooks, fishmongers, restaurant and hotels owners, etc.), as well as the public, are invited to Corfu on Friday 20 May at 12:00-14:00 at the Municipal Theatre, in order to be informed about the area's alien species and their impact.

The organisation stated the following:

“In addition, our aim is to expand together the supply and demand for edible marine alien species, to highlight their taste and commercial value, in order to reduce their spread and the fishing pressure on overfished native species.

On the same day at 18:00-21:00 we invite the residents and visitors of the island to taste dishes prepared for us by renowned local chefs at NAOK.

The actions will continue in Paxos on Saturday 21 May. The informative event will take place at the 'Theofrastos' Cafe at 12:00-14:00 and the gastronomic event at the same place at 18:00-21:00 where everyone will have the opportunity to taste edible marine alien species and discover how the seafood they choose to eat can protect the marine environment.

On Monday 23 May we will be visiting Zakynthos, where the information event will take place at the Cultural Centre at 12:00-14:00 and the gastronomic event at Solomos Square at 18:00-21:00.

The last stop for the Ionian Islands is Cephalonia. We will be there on May 25.

The action is being organised by the environmental organisation iSea in collaboration with the Blue Marine Foundation, the Ionian Environment Foundation, the Argolic Environment Foundation and the Cyclades Preservation Fund, with the support of the Municipalities of Corfu & Diapontia Islands, Zakynthos and Argostoli."
