The Corfu waste management facility is expected to be put out to tender again in two months, according to the Solid Waste Management Organisation (FODSA) Director of Technical Services Theodoros Kardaris.
The Ionian Islands FODSA Board decided unanimously at the meeting on Friday to cancel and repeat the tender process for the award of the project entitled ‘Construction of Corfu urban solid waste treatment plant’.
Amongst other things, regarding this decision, it is noted that if any errors or omissions are detected at any stage of the award procedure, the contracting authority may, after consulting the responsible body, partially cancel the procedure or reformulate its result accordingly or decide to repeat the procedure from the point where the error or omission occurred.
Mr. Kardaris told Enimerosi that the existing tender documents will be adapted to the EU requirements for complete treatment of organic waste and reduction of residue to 10%-12% from 40%. “It completely changes the philosophy of the project, which will be different from what was planned as the EU is asking for complete treatment of organic waste. There will be one plant that will do it all, while the residue produced, which will be the smallest possible, will be used in the production of secondary fuel from other plants to be built on the mainland,” he said.
He estimated that in the autumn of 2022, the contractor for the project will have been selected and, probably the same year, its construction will begin. Regarding the absorption of the funding with the end of 2023 as the deadline, he pointed out that this obstacle has been overcome as the project is included in the new programming period 2021-2027.
As the Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa told Enimerosi, funding from the EU has been secured - following negotiations with the government - on the condition that the facilities to be built in the country, including Corfu, will meet modern standards.
