CORFU. All the indications are that the building is on its "last legs" and has been for several years now.
All the indications are that the building is ready to collapse - and has been like that for several years. The roof has already collapsed. Plaster and glass are falling onto the street more and more frequently and it has only been by good fortune that nobody has been injured yet.
This 'shameful building' is in the heart of the historic town centre and just a few steps away from San Giacomo Old Town Hall!
The Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros is visiting the building today along with an engineer and a contractor in order to do some initial work to prevent accidents. "We are going to replace the tattered burlap sheets, inspect the scaffolding and fix the rotten window frames in order to prevent any accidents," Nikos Kalogeros told Enimerosi.
"The problem is that the building belongs to the Ministry for Environment and Energy," he said. "Both we and the previous local authority have taken several steps to get repair work done but we have come up against a huge amount of bureaucracy. In her recent visit to the Ministry, the Mayor requested that we be able to carry out even just basic work to save the building. In the next few days, we will go inside - taking great care because the roof has collapsed. We will then send a technical report to the Ministry so that action can finally be taken."
He stressed that, "Whatever the reaction is - even if we are arrested - we have to take some action, even if it isn't under our jurisdiction. People and children walk past the building and it is extremely dangerous - there could even be deaths. We can't leave things as they are any longer. We have put up tape as there is the danger of more materials falling off in any strong winds."
