Instead of their identity card, citizens can now present the identification certificate.
The Ministries of Digital Governance and Citizen Protection have announced that citizens can now store their identification certificate on their mobile phones, as the new version of the ‘Covid Free GR Wallet’ app is available on iOS and Android platforms for mobile devices and tablets from Tuesday morning.
This is an initiative that will significantly facilitate citizens and businesses during the checks for Covid certificates (vaccination, recovery or tests).
The identification certificate contains details of the ID card – full name, date of birth and photograph. In this way, wherever a Covid certification check is required upon entry, citizens can present their identification certificate instead of their ID card, but it will not be allowed to be scanned by employees at catering and entertainment venues.
How to use the app
The process of creating and saving the identification certificate is very simple. First of all, citizens need to install the new updated version of the ‘Covid Free GR Wallet’ app through the iOS and Android platforms for mobile devices and tablets. Then, they should click the icon with the word ‘Identification’ (‘Ταυτοπροσωπία’) in order to start the process of issuing the document using the Taxisnet or web banking codes.
To complete the process, a One Time Password (OTP) is required, which is sent by SMS to the citizen's confirmed mobile phone number.
Once the process is successfully completed, the identification certificate is automatically generated and safely stored in the ‘Covid Free GR Wallet’ app. In addition, the citizens have the option to save it in their device’s wallet.
The identification certificate generated by gov.gr will receive a unique verification and QR code.
It should be noted that the identification certificate can only be used for certificate checks in accordance with the measures to limit the spread of the virus. It does not replace the ID card, nor is it a travel document. Therefore, when Covid certificates are being checked, the identification certificate will only be presented and not scanned by employees at catering and entertainment venues, but only by the responsible state authorities and only after they have been authenticated by Public Administration Codes.
