CORFU. The Minister for Mercantile Marine announced new ferry connections and port infrastructure.

Immediately after the inauguration ceremony for the new water ambulance, which took place at Corfu Port Authority, a meeting was held in the Ionian Islands Region under the Minister for Mercantile Marine Yiannis Plakiotakis.

The Minister visited Corfu along with the Secretary General of Ports, Port Policy and Maritime Investments Evaggelos Kyriazopoulos, the Secretary General for Insular Policy and Aegean Manolis Koutoulakis, the Hellenic Coastguard Chief Theodoros Kliaris, the Director of the Ministry of Maritime and Island Policy ESPA Executive Structure Athena Foka and the Director of the Maritime Communications Directorate Georgios Riggas.

Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas, the three Corfu Mayors Meropi Ydraiou, Giorgos Mahimaris and Kostas Lessis, as well as the Paxos Mayor Spyros Vlahopoulos, were also present at the meeting.

“The institutionalisation of the integrated maritime policy and its designation as a national strategy has already had results,” said Mr. Plakiotakis. “We have secured very important resources for the next programming period and we are responding to two very important problems of insularity: the sufficiency of quality ferry connections combined with the upgrading and strengthening of the port security infrastructure.”

Specifically, as Mr. Plakiotakis noted, “we announced today specific funding for port infrastructure totalling €9 million for the Ionian Islands Region and €18 million for Corfu. At the same time, we also announced the funding of specific ferry connections for the whole Ionian Islands Region, which for the next programming period and for the next seven years amounts to €44 million.

In total, we have fundings exceeding €73 million for the Ionian Islands Region for the upgrading of port infrastructure, as well as for investments in maritime transport.

In particular, the Corfu port infrastructure concerns the upgrading of the Agios Stefanos Avlioton (€9 million) and Mathraki (€7 million) harbours and the Lefkimmi port (€2 million) with a total budget of €18 million. The total budget for port infrastructure in the Ionian Islands amounts to €29 million.

The government team also visited the Agios Stefanos harbour in North Corfu, which was followed by a meeting to discuss the planned projects.
