CORFU. Central Corfu Municipality is taking part in European Mobility Week.
Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality is raising awareness with regard to using environmentally-friendly means of transport for European Mobility Week (16-22 September). The main event in the series of activities will be Car Free Day on Sunday 26 September, when the historic centre of Corfu Town will be closed to vehicles, giving people the opportunity to walk or cycle.
At a press conference yesterday, Mayor Meropi Ydraiou said that the aim of European Mobility Week is to raise awareness and change public behaviour with the use of alternative means of transport in town and the promotion of sustainable means of transport.
"The aim is to showcase another model of mobility, pedestrian and vehicular traffic in towns so that we can gradually implement what is the local authority's objective - more human and greener towns with people, pedestrians and 'softer' means of transport," she said.
Special activities
Special sustainable transport promo spots were projected in Annunziata Square on Tuesday and at the entrance to the Municpal Theatre on Wednesday and leaflets distributed. European Mobility Week has created a virtual museum at https://www.20yearsmobilityweekmuseum.eu/ and information posted on all the Municipality's sites and social media pages regarding the history of the campaign, the impact it has had and its commitment to the sustainability priorities of the European Commission, such as the European Green Agreement.
Environmental stations have been set up at 10 key spots in Corfu Town to measure various environmental parameters and atmospheric pollution caused to a great extent by vehicles, as part of the memorandum of cooperation the Municipality has with the Ionian University Department of Informatics CMODlab.
Municipal crews are again improving pedestrian crossings in town to help facilitate their use.
More measures to increase sustainable mobility are also planned, which, Ms Ydraiou said, will be regularly implemented/
Car Free Day on Sunday
On Sunday 26 September the historic centre of Corfu Town will be closed to traffic and parts of the centre as well as part of the shore road Dimokratias Avenue will be used exclusively by pedestrians, cyclists, public transport (urban buses and taxis) and horse and carriage.
From 09:00 to 14:00 vehicles will be banned in the following areas:
Along Dimokratias Avenue from the junction with Alexandras Avenue (Douglas Column) along Agoniston Polytechniou, Eleftherias, Arseniou and Donzelot until the old courts.
Rizospaston Voulefton from the junction with Alexandras Avenue and Aspiotis and Akadimias.
Georgiou Theotoki from the junction with Alexandras Avenue and Stam. Desylla.
Traffic police will be policing the above areas.
"The Theme this year for European Mobility Week is Safe and Healthy with Sustainable Mobility," said Corfu Traffic Police Chief Vlachopoulos. "The aim is to make use of a basic conclusion from the coronavirus pandemic that the 'softer' the means of transport, the more environmentally-friendly and attractive towns become for the public."
Free and half-price bus tickets
During the car-free period on Sunday, all urban KTEL buses will be free for pupils and half-price for everyone else in order to encourage the use of public transport.
