CORFU. International Conference on Ioannis Capodistrias in October in Corfu – Events for the 200th Anniversary to continue in 2022.

In collaboration with the Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities and the Ministry of Culture, Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality is organizing two magical evenings full of poetry, art and music under a starry sky and the August full moon dedicated to the first Governor of Modern Greece Ioannis Capodistrias on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 August, as part of the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution.

At a press conference held this morning at the San Giacomo Old Town Hall – where those involved in the events were also present – Mayor Meropi Ydraiou said that, despite the pandemic, the Municipality supports culture and cultural associations, since culture in crisis conditions, like those we are experiencing at the moment, is the “lifeboat that can save us and get us to the opposite shore, especially because of the history that Corfu has in this field, its tradition and its cultural activities”.

As she explained, the events will be taking place until the end of 2021 and will continue into 2022. “We really want the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution to include high quality activities and events even with the pandemic,” said Ms. Ydraiou.

This two-day tribute is designed and directed by Petros Gallias. Admission to the events, which will start at 9:30pm, is free. The maximum number of attendees at the events will be 100 on Saturday and 450 on Sunday on a first come first served basis. Safety measures will be strictly adhered to in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The events

The events entitled “I am going to my homeland...” begin on Saturday 21 August at 9:30pm. In the garden in front of the Ionian Academy, where his statue is located, people will get to know Ioannis Capodistrias through his own writings, letters and notes. The texts that were chosen from the Governor's huge archive will be read by the actors, S. Asonitis, S. Vergis, N. Kapodistrias and M. Savvani. Baritone A. Hondrogiannis will perform songs from the Greek Revolution accompanied by pianist M. Eloul.

At the end of the evening the “Ioannis Kapodistrias” Philharmonic Society and the members of the Corfu Children's Choir P. Varagoulis, I. Capodistrias and H. Capodistrias will perform the “Hymn to Liberty”. The audience at Saturday's event will not exceed 100 people.

The two-day tribute to Ioannis Kapodistrias will end on Sunday 22 August with a musical evening at the Old Fortress, in front of St. George's Church, under the August full moon. In the first part of the event, the singers V. Karayianni, P. Karydis, P. Kontos, J. Poulou along with the conductor and pianist N. Vasiliou and the San Giacomo Municipal Choir, under the instruction of A. Goussis, accompanied by pianist M. Eloul and conducted by Anton Ivanof will perform songs and arias from operas written for the Greek Revolution. In the second part they will perform well-known and beloved arias from the Italian Bel Canto. Finally, the actress C. Kouloubi will read poetry by Ioannis Capodistrias.

“We invite you to participate and become part of this special cultural experience, here, where the rich cultural tradition and the modern artistic activity creatively intertwine and find new ways of communication”, said the Deputy Mayor for Culture Chrysoula Tombrou, noting that the audience will not exceed 450 people.
