Signatures of “Ecological Awareness Charter” being collected at Corfu Old Town Hall

CORFU. The Charter has been placed outside the Old Town Hall for residents and visitors to sign, as a Public Contract of Ecological Awareness.
The “Ecological Awareness Charter” was signed last week, at the Old Town Hall, by the Mayor Meropi Ydraiou and the President of “AQUAHELP Foundation” Giorgos Korfias, as part of the “Clean it like Greek” programme.
The Charter was placed today outside the Old Town Hall for residents and visitors to sign, as a Public Contract of Environmental Awareness.
This programme is being conducted by the “AQUAHELP Foundation” and is under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) and the Ministry of Tourism.
The Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality is continuing its efforts for promotion and international cooperation, but mainly for a real shift towards the sustainable and green development of the island, as well as the further upgrading of tourism. That is why it decided to join the “Clean it like Greek” Ecology and Philhellenism programme, which aims to make Greece the cleanest country in the world by 2024.
This inclusion is a continuation of previous similar actions by the Municipality, such as Corfu's destination assessment by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), which included an initial assessment of the island's situation and aims to provide benchmark data and find ways for balanced development of tourism in the locality through a map for sustainable development of Corfu tourism, which will be the basis for planning of the next decade.
A similar project was the recent clean-up of the seabeds at Anemomylos and Paleokastritsa in collaboration with Aegean Rebreath and the setting up of the 1st Marine Waste Collection Point. Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality was also one of the founding members of the first network of Municipalities for the protection of the Greek marine environment, which consists of the country’s island and coastal Municipalities (“Blue Municipalities Network”).
This project is also part of Central Corfu Municipality's participation in the European Commission's “100 Intelligent Cities Challenge” programme, in which the Municipality is participating with the main theme of “Waste Management and Circular Economy” and has the ultimate aim of reducing the Municipality’s overall carbon footprint.
Also present at the signing of the “Ecological Awareness Charter” were Mr. Mavridis (CEO) and Mrs. Vekkri (Public Relations) from the “AQUAHELP Foundation”, as well as the Deputy Mayor for Tourism Panagiotis Varouchas, the Special Tourism Advisor Yannis Georgotas, the Deputy Mayor and Project Manager of the local “100 Intelligent Cities” (ICC) team Panayiota Tzanne and the Scientific Partner and Assistant Project Manager of the local ICC team Viktoras Dimoulis.
