CORFU. The two plots of land that have been located are close to the Catholic cemetery and the greenhouses. Each of them has the potential for 100 parking spaces.

The Regional Authority aims to create two car parks in Solari to help solve the traffic problem in the area. Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure & Technical Works Manolis Orphanoudakis told Enimerosi  that the car parks will be located at both ends of the Solari road to serve both residents and visitors.

The two plots of land have already been located and are close to the Catholic cemetery and the greenhouses at the other end of the road. Each of them has the potential for 100 parking spaces.

Mr. Orphanoudakis said that the studies have been completed and the car parks are expected to be ready by next year.

The two car parks are expected to ease the problems in the area, where, every day, vehicles can be seen parked along both sides of Eth. Paleokastritsa Rd. making life difficult for other drivers and pedestrians and closing off one lane on both sides.

"To improve the traffic situation we need to create the infrastructure for both residents and visitors to be able to park," Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Melita Andrioti told ERA Kerkyra. "Although most businesses in the area have their own car parks, the infrastructure needs to be created for a permanent solution."

Immediate traffic measures

Immediate measures will be coming into force in the area in order to create the aforementioned infrastructure.

Ms. Andrioti said that it has been proposed that parking be prohibited on the side of the road leading into town immediately - probably from Wednesday - but the Regional Authority will make the necessary announcement regarding the new traffic measures in Solari following consultations with the Traffic Police and the Regional Technical Works Department.

According to Mr. Orphanoudakis, the contractor responsible for providing proper signage and road markings for the measures will begin work by the end of the week. He said that the prohibition of parking on the one side of the road will be permanent and once the car parks are ready, will be extended to the other side of the road so that parking will be completely prohibited along the section of Eth. Paleokastritsa Rd in Solari.

The new measure is expected to bring relief to the area, which suffers from heavy traffic due to the fact that it is the main road from the north of the island to the airport - especially in the summer months with the tourists and tourist coaches.
