CORFU. Corfu Medical Association has expressed its deep concern at the jump in the number of COVID-19 cases on the island.
In a statement signed by the President Dimitris Kaloudis and Secretary Anastasia Apostolidou the Association says the following:
"We consider that the coming two weeks will be the most critical for the reversal of the spread of the virus. This should be the strategical goal in the coming hours and days.
We believe that the situation can still be turned round as long as the public - and chiefly the young - strictly adhere to the basic measures to stem the spread - social distancing and avoiding large gatherings (indoors and outdoors), frequent washing of hands, disinfection and not touching eyes, nose and mouth, wearing a mask (cloth or simple surgical) which is mandatory in all enclosed spaces and whenever strongly recommended outdoors.
We must remember that this is an insidious virus which isn't affected by heat, there is no medicine to treat it and no vaccine to prevent it. It affects all age-groups with vulnerable groups and the elderly being hardest hit.
The fact that young people can probably pass it lightly and a high percentage are asymptomatic must stop being used as an excuse for non-adherence to the aforementioned measures, especially at social events and mass entertainment venues where risk of spreading the virus increases exponentially.
We also call on all members of the public to trust the views of scientists regarding coronavirus and not to be influenced by conspiracy theories that dismiss how critical the situation is, deny that the virus exists and don't comprehend the magnitude of the problem.
At the same time, the State must without delay strengthen and support the Health System nationwide - especially in tourist destinations - with permanent personnel and modern equipment.
Finally, we once again call on the young, with their maturity and determination, to make a determined effort to prevent the spread of the virus"
