Council rejects Spyros Neratzis΄ proposal for prohibition of cars and smoking at Mon Repos

CORFU. The majority of councillors voted against Spyros Neratzis΄ proposal late last night at the Corfiot & Diapontian Municipal Council meeting.
The leader of the Kerkyra Psilla party proposed the banning of cars and smoking in Mon Repos - which is, in fact, already the law.
At the moment, cars are 'unofficially' allowed into the Mon Repos estate to park outside the Municipal Council meeting room when meetings take place. Smoking is not allowed inside the hall - outside everyone does as they choose.
Only three Councillors from Mr. Neratzis' party and Angela Rigga from Mr. Sarlis' party voted in favour. The reason given for voting against it was that there aren't the resources available for security and enforcing the law.
The proposal which was rejected:
As elected representatives it is our duty to obey the law and ask our fellow citizens to be law-abiding and cooperative. Let's begin with cars and smoking in the Mon Repos estate. We can't ask that we should obey the law - that is self-evident. We can decide tonight, however, that, until a barrier is put up at the Mon Repos entrance, the Municipality should provide security at the entrance so that vehicles can't come in. The law is that cars are prohibited and only vehicles for those with special needs are allowed access - the lack of parking spaces outside Mon Repos does not justify violating the law.
We therefore request that we decide on the following:
1. The Technical Works Department to prepare a study to place a barrier or other means of controlling access to this historical site.
2. Acquisition of environmentally-friendly means of transport compatible with legislation to bring people to the historical site.
3. Until the above have been implemented the law should be applied and the appropriate service should prohibit the entrance of vehicles in the historical site.
4. Utilisation of the Municipal plot of land opposite the entrance to Mon Repos as a car park.
5.Creation of pedestrian crossings at the Mon Repos entrance.
