Common Declaration signed by movements and initiatives against hydrocarbon drilling

Citizens΄ movements and initiatives in Western Greece and the Ionian against hydrocarbon drilling have signed and sent the following declaration to the country΄s authorities and production companies:
- We will collectively resist any planning and execution of hydrocarbon drilling in our region, in Greece and throughout the world.
- Hydrocarbon drilling has a serious impact on the climate, the environment and the local economies damaging the quality of our life, our future and violating our basic human rights.
- The cost of drilling to the climate crisis is much greater than any supposed economic benefits both on a local level and to the national economy.
- We recognise that the use of hydrocarbons contributes to the climate crisis, the consequences of which will be devastating unless governments draw up policies in line with scientific recommendations - specifically the Special Report on 1.5°C from the UN Intergovernmental Committee for Climate Change.
- We support the pupils' climate demonstrations and protests and we are on the side of the pupils of this country and the planet who are taking collective action to reverse the global climate crisis.
- We are participating in the global movement to tackle the global climate crisis.
We demand:
- Cessation of all hydrocarbon drilling in our country.
- Immediate adoption of policies to free the economy from dependence on fossil fuels in a socially fair way and adhering to the timeline produced by climate scientists for 1.5°C.
