CORFU. The spectacular Varkarola in Palaiokastritsa reenacts the arrival of Odysseus on the island of Corfu after his long voyage.

After being shipwrecked by an enraged Poseidon, Odysseus is found on the shore by Nafsika, daughter of King Alcinous, and the Phaeacians help him return home.

The myth is brought to life by boats, floating stages, majorettes, dancers, actors and fireworks accompanied by music by Vangelis.

All of these along with musicians, divers, philharmonic bands and the natural surrounding beauty create a phantasmagoric spectacle which gets better every year.

The first Varkarola in Palaiokastritsa took place in 1997 - organised by Lakones Community and its President Spyros Michalas along with the Scuba Diving Centre and Palaiokastritsa Monastery with the participation of local boats and organisations.

The date of the first Varkarola there was 13 July - the feast day of the small church on Palaiokastritsa Bay - and in recent years it has taken place during the first week of August.
