ATHENS. The fast-track procedure for the study and construction of the harbour began on 18 February.

The Infrastructure General Secretariat at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport began the procedure with a letter to the Ministry of Mercantile Marine and Island Policy regarding the decision-making body for the project.

Necessary studies and plans will be drawn up and based on these work will begin on Mathraki harbour improvements.

The project includes the following:

1. Construction of a windward jetty to act as a breakwater protection. Stone facing may be added in the future.

2. Reconstruction of the lee breakwater making it lower crested.

3. Construction of coastal platforms and floating piers.

4. Removal of existing mooring quays.

5. Excavation of a basin with a depth of 5.9 metres.

6. Construction of a ramp at the beginning of the windward jetty to lift and lower vessels to allow vehicles pulling the vessels to turn and also be temporarily stored.

The Ministry of Mercantile Marine and Island Policy acted on the letter and on 20 February sent the corresponding document to Corfu Port Authority for its agreement to the proposal and for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to have the responsibility.

Supervision of the project has been assigned to the Ministry's Department of Port Infrastructure and supervision of the studies assigned to the Department of Studies and Planning.

Setting up the decision-making body is the first step of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport fast-track procedure.

The harbour extension will lead to an improvement in ferry services to the Diapontia Islands as at the moment the accessibility of Mathraki harbour is limited.
