CORFU. The new gallery opens on Saturday 15 December with an exhibition of works by the well-known artist Yiannis Dimitrakis.
Despite Corfu's artistic history, something that has been noticeably lacking on the island is a venue dedicated to international modern art. No longer. The Attic Gallery hopes to fill that gap and is opening on Saturday 15 December at 20:30 with an individual exhibition "Horses" by the well-known Athens artist Yiannis Dimitrakis.
The Attic Gallery is housed in the historical building in the heart of the town, which used to house the French Institute. It is the creation of the team which also set up the ICON Gallery at 52 Guildford St. in 2015 under the supervision of the well-known painter and cultural historian Dr. Sasha Chaitow.
The spacious new venue - almost 200 sq.m. - is equipped to host a variety of cultural events. Nine individual exhibitions by Greek and international artists have already been announced for the period 2019 - 20 along with various workshops, talks and other happenings.
The venue's website www.theattic.gr states that the work of both new and established artists will be seen at the gallery. There will also book and product presentations, talks, seminars, theatrical rehearsals, film screenings etc. and the priority is to give support to young people.
There is a permanent showroom and shop which can be visited daily (except Mondays) 12:00 - 22:00. Works by Megoulas, Valaris, Sideris, Vlazaki and Alamanos amongst others can be seen here.
The opening exhibition will be 'Horses'.
