ATHENS. This replaces the illogical legislation from last August which established a GNTO (Greek National Tourism Organization) office for Epirus and the Ionian Islands based in Ioannina.
There was reaction against the previous legislation from all those involved in the tourist industry and the Corfu Town Council and Ionian Islands Regional Council voted for the legislation to be rescinded as, on the one hand, it downgraded the Ionian Islands Region and, on the other, tourism policies are different for the islands from those of the mainland.
The new legislation that was brought to Parliament for thematic tourism takes care of the problem which had been created. "The GNTO Office for Epirus and the Ionian Islands has been split into two - the GNTO Epirus Office, based in Ioannina (current office) and the GNTO Ionian Islands Office, based in Corfu."
