Accord initialled at Lake Prespa to end dispute between Greece and FYROM

FLORINA. In Triethnes in Greater Prespa the Foreign Ministers of Greece and FYROM signed the Prespa Accord in the presence of Matthew Nimetz the UN special envoy.
The accord to settle the dispute between Greece and FYROM was initialled on the Greek side of Lake Prespa in the village of Psarades. The dispute came about following the break-up of Yugoslavia in 1991 into separate independent United Nations state members.
In the presence of the Prime Ministers of Greece and FYROM, Alexis Tsipras and Zoran Zaev, the Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias signed the accord for the renaming of FYROM along with his counterpart Nikola Dimitrov.
The Foreign Ministry describes it as “The Final Agreement for a solution to the dispute outlined in the UN Security Council decisions 817 (1993) and 845 (1993), the end of the Interim Accord of 1995 and the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership Relationship between Greece and its neighbouring country”.
The European Union was represented by foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini and EU enlargement commissioner Johannes Hahn.
The UN was represented by Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Matthew Nimetz, UN special envoy for the naming dispute. The name that both countries have agreed to is Republic of North Macedonia.
As the accord was being signed, there were demonstrations in the area from the ‘Committee for the Greekness of Macedonia’. Strong security measures have been taken and there are 8 riot squads present. There were incidents and chemicals were fired.
