CORFU. International Archives Day is celebrated every year on 9 June, which was the date the International Council on Archives was established in 1948.
In response to a request from the International Council on Archives, in 2007 the United Nations established 9 June as International Archives Day.
The aims of International Archives Day are as follows:
1. To raise awareness of the public (organizations and individuals) as to the importance of archives.
2. Promotion of unique and rare documents that are kept and preserved by archival organizations.
3. Improving the image of archives and supporting their promotion on a global level.
The utilitarian, evidential and historical role of archives is becoming increasingly important in modern times.
On International Archives Day this year - Saturday 9 June, the Corfu section of the National Archives Service is inviting the public to visit its premises which holds the most important records of the Ionian Region from the last six centuries.
"It will be our pleasure to let you discover the world of archives - to give you a guided tour of the reading rooms and our workrooms as well as making you aware of our interesting and exciting activities and welcoming you to our exhibition 'Urban and peri-urban communities: 19th century architectural facades' which is based on original archive materials"
